December is always much anticipated, not just for the holidays, but for the ISBA annual mid-year meeting, this year held at Chicago’s stately and elegant Palmer House Hotel. Starting Wednesday evening, Sue and I enjoyed the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers holiday party, where our good friend Rich Zuckerman was honored with the Academy’s Samuel Berger award for lifetime achievement and service to Family Law.

Starting Thursday, I had the privilege to address our many section councils and committees regarding my candidacy for ISBA Third Vice President. Between Thursday afternoon and Friday, I was delighted to address and meet 50 of our section councils/committees and their members. I enjoyed the questions and insight of our members, and although it was a whirlwind two days, it was great to meet and talk with many of our members whose practice paths don’t often cross with mine.

Friday night began with another jam packed reception hosted by our Diversity Council, the perfect segue to the Supreme Court dinner, where we were treated to an engaging and entertaining speech by our newest Justice, P. Scott Neville. The weekend concluded with a quicker than expected Assembly meeting Saturday morning, where we learned from the ISBA auditors that our Association, unlike many of our peer organizations, remains fiscally sound and on solid ground.

In order to prepare myself for this campaign, I’ve traveled throughout our state, talking to lawyers from many different practices and practice disciplines. I think the ISBA is a tremendous resource offering a myriad of benefits to our members, but I realize that our members are the true judges of the benefits we provide for your dues dollars. I’m committed to seeking and learning from your input, so we can best fulfill our mission, being THE representative of all Illinois lawyers.
